Chapter 1: Central ideas, details, and inference (18 min)
Free sample lesson
Overview
Read literary and informational passages for central ideas, supporting details, and logical inferences.
Key concepts
- A central idea covers the whole text; a theme is a broader message developed through events and details.
- Supporting details explain, illustrate, or prove the central idea.
- An inference combines textual clues with logic without adding unsupported assumptions.
Method
- Preview the question, read the whole passage, and note repeated ideas or turning points.
- State the topic and what the author says about it in one neutral sentence.
- For an inference, identify two clues and explain how they support the conclusion.
Worked example
If later library hours increase visits and help working adults, the central idea is that extended hours improved access.
Check yourself
- Does the answer fit the whole text?
- Can you point to specific evidence?
- Did you avoid a conclusion that goes beyond the passage?
Practice
Read a short article and write one central idea, two supporting details, and one inference.
